World Bank raises Nigeria’s economic rating FOR reducing the level of endemic poverty in the country, the World Bank has promoted Nigeria from a low income country ranking to a medium  income position with the privilege of borrowing from the Breton Wood’s elite club, the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD).     The decision elevating the country’s rating , according to the World bank Country Director for Nigeria , Ms. Marie Francoise Marie-Nelly, was taken at the last month’s Spring  meeting of the World Bank / International monetary Fund (IMF) in Washington. She said the decision was taken after a review of the Nigeria’s economic indication revealed that there was a reduction in poverty rate per capita  in the country which has now dipped to 62.6 per cent from 64.2 per cent as well as improvement in revenue accretion. UNICAL dismisses 5, demotes 10 lecturers for academic fraud

Calabar - The Governing Council of University of Calabar has dismissed five academic staff and demoted 10 others for what it called “academic dishonesty”. A statement issued by Dr Julia Omang, the Registrar and Secretary to Council, on Friday said the disciplinary measure was in furtherance of the institution’s “bid to curb academic dishonesty’’. The statement said four of the dismissed workers were allegedly involved in plagiarism while one was involved in alleged financial fraud. The statement added that the 10 demoted lecturers chose to publish their works in fake or cloned journals and proceeded to submit same and obtained promotion in the process. “The academic staff dismissed for outright plagiarism include Dr Azubuike Iloeje and Dr Maurice Bisong of the Department of English and Literary Studies, Mr Oden Ubi (Department of Marketing) and Dr Paulinus Noah of the Department of Linguistics and Communication Studies.“Dr Damian Agom was dismissed for salary overpayment, enriching him

Veteran actor Justus Esiri is dead

Nollywood and the entire Nigerian entertainment industry has once again been thrown into mourning as another veteran actor Justus Esiri has passed away. It is believed Esiri passed away on Tuesday, February 19, 2013. No details yet on circumstances leading to his death yet. One of the actor’s sons – the very popular pop singer Sidney ‘Dr SID’ Esiri put up a photo of Esiri on his Twitter avatar and updated his bio as ‘RIP Dad‘. Dr SID did not pick up our calls or reply our text message to confirm the story as at the time of this report. Esiri, a long time actor on Nigerian Television started his acting career in the 70s and is most popular for his role as ‘Headmaster’ in the nationwide series Village Headmaster which aired on the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA). He was married to his wife Omiete with whom he had six children, one of them being Dentist-turned pop artiste Dr SID.
